Michael Hamilton is a percussion performer and music educator originally from Grand Blanc, MI. Hamilton is currently the Director of Percussion and Jazz studies in the Mount Vernon ISD in Mount Vernon, TX. Michael holds a Masters of Music in Percussion Performance from Colorado State University, where he worked with Eric Hollenbeck and Shilo Stroman. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Central Michigan University, where he studied percussion primarily with Andrew Spencer and Dave Hall.
Michael currently teaches in the Mount Vernon ISD where he is in charge of the percussion and jazz programs and directs the Mount Vernon middle school non-varsity concert band. Before teaching in Mount Vernon, Hamilton was a graduate teaching assistant at Colorado State University in the jazz and percussion departments, where he was responsible for teaching jazz combos, and assisting with various aspects of the percussion studio. While in Colorado, Hamilton held a successful private lesson studio, where students regularly made honor and all-state ensembles. Hamilton also worked with the percussion section of the state champion Fossil Ridge High School Marching Band. Before coming to Colorado, Michael completed his secondary student teaching seminar in the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools alongside Matt Taton. In addition to student teaching, Michael taught for three years at Mt. Pleasant High School as the Director of Percussion. Hamilton was active with everything percussion-related in the music department, including working with the state-finalist high school marching band and directing the state champion indoor drumline (pictured above and to the right). In 2017, Michael assisted with taking the Mt. Pleasant High School Marching Band to the Bands of America Grand Nationals competition, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Hamilton has instructed numerous high school instrumental music programs across Michigan, as well as scholastic and independent percussion ensembles who competed in the Michigan Color Guard Circuit.
Hamilton’s vast performance experience includes many different ensembles ranging from chamber music, orchestras, jazz ensembles, and the pageantry arts. Most notably, in 2019 Hamilton was a featured soloist on the Colorado State University Percussion Ensemble’s showcase performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Hamilton also performed on the world premiere of David Maslanka’s Concerto No.3 “Do You Know My Name” for Piano and Wind Ensemble. Hamilton’s orchestral experience includes the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, The Baroque on Beaver Festival Orchestra, The Michigan Chamber Orchestra, and consistently held the Principal Percussion Position with the Colorado State University Symphony Orchestra. Hamilton has performed at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic, American Bandmasters Association conference, Northern Colorado Jazz Festival, Michigan Music Conference, and the Elmhurst Jazz festival where he was awarded an outstanding soloist award. Hamilton’s marching arts experience includes WGI percussion independent world class ensembles, Northcoast Academy and Eastside Fury, as well as DCI Open Class Finalist, Legends Drum and Bugle Corps. In addition to gigging regularly with jazz and rock groups, Hamilton has also recently spent studio time recording with Space Force, a jazz fusion ensemble, and Endless Earth, a progressive rock trio.
When not working, Michael enjoys staying active with family and friends, oftentimes biking, hiking, running, and most importantly, cooking with fresh lime and cilantro.
